Enjoy the Illinois Prairie Path Responsibly: Trail Etiquette Reminders for the Busy Riding Season

With warmer temperatures finally here, more riders, runners, walkers, and families are getting outside and enjoying the beautiful Illinois Prairie Path. At Recycled Cycling Bike Shop, we love seeing the trails full of people getting active and enjoying the outdoors.

As traffic on the paths increases, it’s a great time for a refresher on proper trail etiquette to help keep everyone safe and having fun.

Pass Safely and Communicate

Always announce yourself when passing others. A simple:

  • “On your left!”

  • Ringing a bell

  • Friendly verbal warning

can prevent accidents and surprises. Slow down when passing pedestrians, children, or other cyclists.

Stay to the Right

Just like driving, slower traffic should stay to the right side of the trail. Avoid riding side-by-side when the path is busy so others can pass safely.

Keep Headphones Low

It’s important to stay aware of your surroundings. If you use headphones, keep the volume low enough to hear approaching riders, pedestrians, and trail crossings.

Watch Your Speed

The Prairie Path is shared by everyone — not just cyclists. Ride at a safe, controlled speed, especially around:

  • Crowded areas

  • Blind corners

  • Crosswalks

  • Trail intersections

A few extra seconds can prevent a serious accident.

Be Predictable

Ride in a straight line and avoid sudden stops or turns without looking behind you first. Hand signals are always appreciated when slowing or turning.

Respect Pedestrians

Pedestrians always have the right of way. Be patient, courteous, and give extra space whenever possible.

Clean Up After Yourself

Help keep the Prairie Path beautiful. Don’t leave behind water bottles, snack wrappers, tubes, or other trash.

Check Your Bike Before You Ride

Before heading out, make sure your:

  • Tires are properly inflated

  • Brakes are working

  • Chain is lubricated

  • Lights are charged if riding near dusk

Nothing ruins a great ride faster than a preventable mechanical issue.

Whether you’re commuting, training, or just enjoying a casual cruise, a little courtesy goes a long way toward making the trails enjoyable for everyone.

If your bike needs a tune-up before peak riding season, stop by Recycled Cycling Bike Shop. Our expert mechanics can help keep your bike safe, smooth, and ready for the miles ahead.
