Beat the Heat: The Importance of Hydration and Nutrition During Summer Rides

Summer is one of the best times of the year to enjoy cycling. Whether you're cruising the Illinois Prairie Path, tackling local trails, commuting to work, or joining friends for a weekend group ride, the longer days and warm weather make it easy to spend hours in the saddle.

However, with rising temperatures comes an increased risk of dehydration and fatigue. Staying properly hydrated and fueled can make the difference between a great ride and a miserable one.

Why Hydration Matters

Your body loses fluids constantly through sweat, especially during hot and humid summer rides. Even mild dehydration can negatively impact your cycling performance and overall health.

Signs of dehydration include:

  • Increased thirst

  • Dry mouth

  • Headaches

  • Muscle cramps

  • Dizziness

  • Fatigue

  • Reduced power and endurance

By the time you feel thirsty, you're often already dehydrated. That's why it's important to start every ride well-hydrated and continue drinking throughout your ride.

Hydration Tips for Summer Cycling

  • Drink water before leaving home.

  • Carry at least one water bottle for shorter rides and two bottles for longer rides.

  • Take small sips every 10-15 minutes rather than waiting until you're thirsty.

  • Consider electrolyte replacement during rides longer than an hour, especially on hot days.

  • Rehydrate after your ride to help your body recover.

Fuel Your Ride

Hydration is only half the equation. Your muscles need fuel to keep producing energy, especially during rides lasting longer than an hour.

When you ride, your body burns stored carbohydrates (glycogen). Once those stores begin to run low, you'll experience what cyclists commonly call "bonking"—a sudden loss of energy that can make even easy miles feel impossible.

Eating small amounts of easily digestible carbohydrates during your ride helps maintain energy levels and improve endurance.

Nutrition Recommendations

For rides over 60-90 minutes, consider consuming:

  • Energy gels

  • Energy chews

  • Energy waffles

  • Hydration mixes with carbohydrates and electrolytes

Aim to eat something every 30-45 minutes on longer rides to keep your energy levels consistent.
