Get a Grip This Fall: Why It’s Time to Change Your Bicycle Tires

As summer turns to fall here in Chicagoland, the days get shorter, temperatures drop, and the roads and trails start to change. One of the easiest ways to prepare your bicycle for fall riding is to take a look at your tires.

Fall is a great time to consider switching to a tire with a slightly more aggressive tread.

More Tread Means More Traction

Summer riding conditions are often relatively dry and predictable, but fall can bring wet pavement, damp trails, and one of the biggest hazards for cyclists this time of year — wet leaves.

A tire with a more aggressive tread pattern can provide additional grip and traction when conditions get slippery. The tread helps the tire better conform to the riding surface and can give you more confidence when cornering, braking, or riding over damp leaves and other loose surfaces.

That doesn't mean you need a huge, knobby mountain-bike tire for every bicycle. Depending on where and how you ride, there are plenty of tire options that offer a little more tread while still rolling efficiently on pavement and bike paths.

Don't Forget About Tire Condition

Fall is also a great time to inspect your existing tires. Look for:

  • Cracks or dry rot in the rubber

  • Excessive wear or a flattened center tread

  • Cuts or damage to the sidewalls

  • Exposed casing

  • Frequent flats

  • Tires that are simply getting old

Even if your tires still look okay, replacing worn tires before the weather changes can help keep your fall rides safer and more enjoyable.
