Layer Up for Fall Cycling: Comfort on the Ride, Storage on the Bike

Fall is one of the best times of year to ride—cool mornings, crisp air, and colorful scenery. But the changing temperatures can make it tricky to stay comfortable throughout your ride. The key? Layering.

When you dress in layers, you can easily adapt to shifting conditions. Start with a breathable base layer that wicks away moisture. Add an insulating mid-layer to trap warmth, then finish with a lightweight, wind- or water-resistant outer shell. As the day warms or your effort increases, you can peel off layers to prevent overheating, then put them back on when you cool down.

Of course, this flexibility only works if you have a convenient place to stash your extra gear. That’s where bike racks and bags come in. A good rack and pannier system, handlebar bag, or seat pack gives you the space to store a jacket, arm warmers, or gloves without cramming your jersey pockets. Bags also keep your gear dry and organized, so you can enjoy the ride without worrying about where to put your stuff.

With the right layers and smart storage on your bike, you’ll stay comfortable, confident, and ready for every mile of fall cycling.
