Here are some of the Forest Preserves near or in Warrenville with unique features:

  • Blackwell Forest Preserve: This preserve is popular for its varied recreation, including hiking, biking, fishing, and camping. A unique feature is Mount Hoy, a 190-foot-tall hill built from a capped landfill that offers fantastic views of the surrounding area and even the Chicago skyline on clear days. In the winter, it's a popular spot for snow tubing.

  • Warrenville Grove Forest Preserve: This preserve is known for its rolling topography, including floodplain and upland woodlands, natural fens, and the shoreline of the West Branch DuPage River. Its unusual feature is its historical significance as the site of a gristmill powered by the river, with remnants of the old dam visible.

  • St. James Farm Forest Preserve: This preserve features forests, fields, and restored wetlands. An unusual feature is its history as a former estate, which includes old yellow barns, a corn silo, and white-railed areas for horses, giving it a unique, almost storybook-like feel.

  • McDowell Grove Forest Preserve: This preserve features dense woodlands and trails along the DuPage River. A unique aspect, noted by users, is the feeling of being truly immersed in the woods and the possibility of seeing wildlife like deer. Fawell Dam also provides great fishing and wildlife viewing.

  • Herrick Lake Forest Preserve: While not directly in Warrenville, it's connected via trails to Warrenville Grove. It's known for its lake and is considered one of the best preserves in the suburbs.

Of course, the best way to access all these wonderful forest preserves is by bicycle! Each of these preserves are directly accessible from the Illinois Prairie Path and adjoining trails! Take a look here.
